The Saudi capital, Riyadh, has been awarded the Global Active City certification, becoming the first city in the Middle East to achieve this prestigious international classification. This recognition comes as a result of Riyadh’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and community well-being for all, according to an announcement by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.
The Commission’s CEO, Eng. Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Sultan, affirmed that this achievement reflects institutional collaboration and the combined efforts of relevant entities to highlight the Kingdom’s regional and global leadership in enhancing quality of life.
What Is the Active Cities Initiative?
The Active Cities Initiative—established by the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) and Evalio, with the support of the International Olympic Committee—grants its certification to cities that implement specific systems and standards aimed at promoting healthy and active living, and encouraging physical activity among all segments of society.
Commitment to Vision 2030
This classification underscores the Royal Commission for Riyadh City’s commitment to transforming the capital into a city that offers its residents and visitors a healthier and more active lifestyle, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Quality of Life Program.
A Citywide Integrated Approach
In recent years, the Saudi capital has adopted an integrated, citywide approach focused on expanding public spaces, developing walking and cycling paths, upgrading sports facilities, and launching community initiatives that encourage participation in various physical activities.
This approach is integrated with the health, transportation, education, and urban planning sectors to build a supportive urban environment that enhances well-being and inclusivity across all segments of society.
Broad Collaborative Efforts
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City led the efforts to obtain this certification, with the support and participation of the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Sports for All Federation, along with more than 20 related entities. This collaboration has helped embed physical activity as a core component of Riyadh’s future vision.
Implications of the Classification
The Global Active City classification reflects Riyadh’s progress in infrastructure development, projects, programs, governance frameworks, and public policies that focus on improving quality of life, enhancing community participation, and promoting sustainable well-being with a positive impact across society.
This recognition marks an important milestone in Riyadh’s journey as a global city that prioritizes the health and well-being of its residents and visitors, further strengthening the Kingdom’s leadership position in quality of life at both regional and international levels.
